In 1999, Greg packed up city life and moved to the Clare Valley, following a growing obsession with wine. Before wine, Greg took what he jokingly calls the “traditional path to winemaking” — real estate and owning a Wendy’s Ice Creamery. Property deals and soft serve, then a one-way ticket to Clare.
Greg Cooley Wines was officially founded in 2002, with the first vintage released under Greg’s own label. Fruit is sourced from a trusted network of growers across the Clare Valley and the neighbouring Adelaide Hills, and the focus has always been direct connection with customers.
By 2003–2004, Greg was already taking the wines on the road, hosting wine luncheons across Australia. Bigger tables, bigger stories, brighter shirts — and a loyal following that’s grown ever since.
Big Ideas,
Real Impact.
Kelli joined the business in 2007 after meeting Greg at a wine lunch. Clare Valley felt like the right place to build a life, raise a family, and grow something together.
In April 2011, over Easter, Greg and Kelli opened their first cellar door (located at the site now known for “Shut the Gate”). From the moment the doors opened, live music became part of the brand’s heartbeat. Over the years the cellar door has hosted some of Australia’s most respected artists, including Beccy Cole, Adam Harvey and Russell Morris.
In 2021, they moved into their new cellar door space — a fresh chapter with more room to host, pour, and bring the Greg Cooley experience to life.
Today, with 24 vintages completed, Greg and Kelli remain hands-on across every part of the business — from vintage decisions and bench trials to tastings, events, and everything in between. If you’re looking for a fun way to explore Clare Valley wines in a relaxed, personal setting, drop in and say hello.
